Gingivitis/Periodontitis
As you age, you may become more likely to develop gingivitis. Gingivitis is caused by bacteria found in plaque that attacks your gums. Symptoms include red, swollen gums, and bleeding when brushing. If you have these symptoms see a dentist.
Gingivitis can lead to a more serious condition, periodontitis. This occurs when the disease progresses from the gum around your tooth and begins to invade the bone that holds your teeth in the jaw. This can weaken the bone causing the gums to recede and pull back from the teeth. This will eventually lead to tooth loss if not treated in time.
Approximately 80 percent of all American adults suffer from some form of gingivitis. Due to decrease in salivary flow and content as we age, the possibility of developing gingivitis increases in older adults. It is important to see your dentist at least twice a year for regular cleanings and checkups.
