Root Decay
As we age, very often more of the roots of teeth become exposed. Roots are much more likely to decay than the crown or top of the tooth. This is because the root is not protected by a layer of enamel.
Seniors have many other factors working against them when it comes to root decay. They may suffer from dry mouth caused simply by aging or in combination with medications or even radiation treatments to the salivary glands.
It is important to treat root decay early as it may advance rapidly leading to tooth loss or root canal treatment. If caught early, a simple filling, along with improved home care may be all that is required. Your dentist may also recommend home or in-office flouride treatments to help fight root decay.
