Dry Mouth

Dry mouth occurs due to decrease in the production of saliva. This may be caused by aging, disease, certain medications, or cancer treatment. This condition can make it hard to eat, swallow, taste, and even talk. It is also is a major contributor to root decay in seniors.

Drinking lots of water and avoiding sweets, tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine are some ways to fight dry mouth. Your dentist also can prescribe medications to ease the symptoms in severe cases of dry mouth.

It is very important that people that suffer from dry mouth do not use lifesavers, cough drops, gum, or other sugar-containing materials to try to stimulate saliva production. Biotene gum and related products are excellent for the treatment of dry mouth. Click here for more information.
